# Aston Villa handed Joao Palhinha lifeline after Bayern transfer U-turn

**Aston Villa’s pursuit of João Palhinha has been handed a significant lifeline after Bayern Munich opened the door to the type of loan deal Unai Emery’s side have been pushing for.**

Villa looked in danger of losing their chance to sign the Portugal international after Bayern rejected a loan proposal containing an option to buy.

Sporting director Max Eberl subsequently suggested there was effectively no route to an agreement on those terms.

That position now appears far less rigid.

Eberl has clarified that Bayern are not ruling out another loan for Palhinha and could consider a temporary deal if an interested club is prepared to pay a significant loan fee.

For Villa, that changes the equation.

## Aston Villa João Palhinha deal suddenly has a way through

[ReadAstonVilla reported last month that Villa wanted to structure a Palhinha move as a loan with an option to buy](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/07/16/aston-villa-prepare-joao-palhinha-loan-move/).

The logic was clear.

Palhinha is 31 and remains on a substantial Bayern contract until 2028. A loan would allow Villa to add an experienced Premier League midfielder without immediately committing the full permanent fee Bayern have been seeking.

Bayern wanted a sale instead.

That disagreement appeared to leave Villa facing a choice between changing their offer or walking away.

Eberl’s latest comments reopen a third route.

A sufficiently lucrative loan fee could potentially satisfy Bayern while allowing Villa to keep the structure they have preferred throughout negotiations.

The midfielder is also understood to be open to returning to the Premier League, where he previously impressed for Fulham and spent last season with Tottenham.

Competition remains.

Benfica have been linked with a permanent proposal, while Newcastle have also been mentioned during the summer, although the latest reports around their position have been mixed.

Villa should therefore not assume the deal will wait for them.

Their wider transfer work has already accelerated sharply, with [Villa reaching an agreement for Zion Suzuki during a busy Sunday at Villa Park](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/08/16/aston-villa-agree-zion-suzuki-deal-as-juventus-bid-for-emi-martinez/).

Palhinha could be the next major decision.

Only days ago, Villa’s preferred deal looked incompatible with Bayern’s demands.

Now Bayern have left the door open.

The question is whether Villa are prepared to pay enough to walk through it.
