Villa arrive after a major summer rebuild under Arroyo. Arroyo reiterated that ambition this week when she said Villa need their supporters [“dreaming with us” heading into the new WSL campaign](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/09/02/we-need-the-fans-dreaming-with-us-arroyo-sets-aston-villa-women-challenge/?utm_source=chatgpt.com).

Chelsea have already played competitive football this season.

Sonia Bompastor’s side secured their place in the Women’s Champions League league phase on Wednesday, beating Real Sociedad 1-0 in Spain to complete a **5-2 aggregate victory**. Chelsea rotated their team during the second leg with Saturday’s WSL opener approaching.

Villa therefore face opponents with competitive minutes already behind them, but Arroyo has had a full pre-season to integrate a heavily changed squad.

Saturday will provide the first meaningful indication of how far that rebuild has taken Aston Villa.
