# Club Brugge lose former Aston Villa target before Champions League clash

**Club Brugge will be without former Aston Villa transfer target Joel Ordóñez when Unai Emery’s side begin their Champions League campaign in Belgium tonight.**

UEFA’s latest Matchday One team news lists the Ecuador international as **out with a foot injury**, leaving Brugge without one of their most experienced central defenders against Villa. It creates an intriguing subplot following Villa’s attempts to bring Ordóñez to Villa Park during the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

Villa made contact with Club Brugge over the 22-year-old as they searched for a replacement for Ezri Konsa, with [Read Aston Villa reporting the Ordóñez approach](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/08/23/aston-villa-make-joel-ordonez-approach-after-55m-konsa-exit/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) before the move eventually collapsed.

## Joel Ordóñez ruled out against Aston Villa

Ordóñez’s absence matters to Ivan Leko’s team.

Club Brugge’s own statistics show the defender made **33 league appearances last season, starting 30**, while also scoring three goals.

He was equally prominent in Europe.

Ordóñez started all ten of Brugge’s Champions League matches recorded by the club last season, playing 872 minutes and winning 28 of his 53 contested duels. Villa also know him well from their previous meetings with Brugge.

The Ecuadorian started when the Belgian side beat Villa 1-0 during the 2024/25 Champions League league phase and featured in both legs when Emery’s side gained revenge with a 6-1 aggregate victory in the last 16.

UEFA currently expects Brandon Mechele and Han-beom Lee to form the centre-back partnership in Ordóñez’s absence.

That could be an area Nicolas Jackson and Villa’s reshaped attack look to exploit.

Emery’s team remain without a Premier League goal this season, but our [Club Brugge scouting report](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/09/06/club-brugge-scouting-report-form-guide/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) shows the Belgian champions have otherwise started the campaign strongly.

Villa therefore have plenty to solve in Bruges.

One player they will not have to overcome is a defender they spent part of August trying to sign.
