# Ballon d’Or data shows why Aston Villa paid £59.5m for Manzambi

Aston Villa are still waiting to unleash Johan Manzambi, but fresh Ballon d’Or analysis helps explain why the club were prepared to break their transfer record for him.

Villa paid around £59.5million to sign the 20-year-old from Freiburg in July following an outstanding 2025/26 campaign and World Cup with Switzerland.

A knee injury has delayed his competitive debut, with Manzambi missing Villa’s opening Premier League matches and the Champions League victory over Club Brugge.

But the numbers behind his rise underline why Unai Emery’s side invested so heavily.

## Johan Manzambi data underlines Aston Villa investment

An official [Ballon d’Or profile of Manzambi](https://ballondor.com/news/posts/johan-manzambi-a-man-for-the-big-occasions) highlights several statistics from his final season at Freiburg.

Perhaps the most unusual is his ability to draw fouls.

Manzambi won **3.3 fouls per 90 minutes** during 2025/26, with only two players across Europe’s five major leagues winning more.

That statistic says plenty about his playing style.

Manzambi is comfortable receiving possession under pressure and carrying the ball into areas where opponents are forced to engage him.

That could become particularly useful for a Villa side who have struggled to consistently progress attacks during their opening Premier League fixtures.

The Ballon d’Or analysis describes him as capable of operating both as a box-crashing No.10 and an energetic ball carrier.

His versatility is equally striking.

Manzambi started 29 matches in central midfield for Freiburg last season, but he was also used 14 times as an attacking midfielder or second striker.

He additionally started from the left wing and in defensive midfield.

That range should give Emery several different ways to use his club-record signing.

## Manzambi already proved himself against elite opposition

There is another statistic that should interest Villa supporters.

Seven of Manzambi’s 10 Bundesliga goal involvements last season came against teams who eventually finished in the top half.

That fits a wider pattern.

He finished the campaign with 16 goal involvements for Freiburg across competitions and was named Europa League Young Player of the Season.

Villa had already experienced his quality directly after facing Freiburg in the Europa League final.

His reputation then grew further at the World Cup.

Manzambi scored three times for Switzerland before the knee injury that ultimately delayed the start of his Aston Villa career.

His performances have now earned him a nomination for the **2026 Men’s Young Talent of the Year award**.

[UEFA’s official list of nominees](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/02a9-218b019cbca5-cb4b9be51c4b-1000--2026-ballon-dor-awards-nominees-revealed/) places Manzambi alongside players including Lamine Yamal, Warren Zaïre-Emery and Pau Cubarsí.

That is significant company for Villa’s new midfielder.

## Aston Villa still waiting for Manzambi debut

The frustration is that Villa have not yet been able to benefit from those qualities.

Manzambi has been recovering from the knee injury suffered with Switzerland and was [ruled out of the Champions League opener against Club Brugge](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/09/07/johan-manzambi-injury-update-club-brugge/).

Emery had previously suggested either Brugge or Nottingham Forest could provide a potential return point.

Manzambi is fully eligible domestically despite appearing on Villa’s Under-21 list, as explained in our [Aston Villa Premier League squad guide](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/09/05/aston-villa-premier-league-squad-2026-27/).

His appearances and statistics will also be tracked throughout the season on the [Johan Manzambi Aston Villa player profile](https://readastonvilla.com/squad/johan-manzambi/).

The size of Villa’s investment inevitably created expectations.

But the evidence from Freiburg, the World Cup and now the Ballon d’Or nomination suggests Villa were buying much more than potential.

Once Manzambi is fit, Emery will finally get the opportunity to show exactly where a £59.5million talent fits into his rebuilt Aston Villa side.
