Aston Villa return to Carabao Cup action on Wednesday. They travel to face Coventry City. As of this update, published on 1 October 2026, Aston Villa v Coventry City is confirmed as the first meeting between the two Midlands clubs for more than 25 years.
That gap makes this one of the longest pauses in a rivalry stretching back nearly a century. History, at least, gives Villa supporters plenty of reason for confidence heading into Wednesday’s tie.
The long history between Aston Villa and Coventry City
The two clubs share a long and occasionally overlapping history. According to 11v11’s complete record of meetings between the sides, Villa and Coventry have met 59 times in competitive football.
The first recorded meeting came in October 1936. The sides drew 0-0 at Villa Park, in the old Second Division. A relegation soon after kept the clubs apart in the league for more than two decades. It broke up what little rivalry had begun to form.
Coventry’s home has changed since then, from Highfield Road to the modern Coventry Building Society Arena. Villa’s own identity has shifted too, a story told in our kit history feature.
Aston Villa’s recent record against Coventry City
The most recent meeting remains a famous one for Villa supporters. On 5 May 2001, Villa produced a five-goal comeback at Villa Park to beat Coventry.
Coventry led 2-0 at half-time, thanks to two goals from Mustapha Hadji. Darius Vassell pulled one back in the 61st minute. Juan Pablo Ángel then equalised with nine minutes left. Paul Merson sealed the turnaround in the 86th minute.
Villa head into Wednesday’s reunion having won the last meeting between the sides. That victory came more than a quarter of a century ago.
