George Hemmings supplied the pass for Tammy Abraham’s opening goal at Coventry, offering Aston Villa an encouraging example before Tottenham.
Abraham’s double took the headlines in Wednesday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory. However, the creation of his first goal deserves attention too.
As FotMob’s match report details, Hemmings released Abraham for the seventh-minute opener. The striker then finished into the bottom-right corner.
For a Villa side with one goal from four Premier League matches, that connection offers something to build upon.
George Hemmings supplies the pass Aston Villa need
The value of Hemmings’ contribution was its end product. His pass put Abraham in position to finish an attack.
That matters when assessing Villa’s attacking options. Choosing a centre-forward is only part of Emery’s task. The players supplying him must recognise his movement and find him before the opportunity disappears.
Our view is that the Coventry opener provides a useful example of those actions working together.
It does not establish Hemmings and Abraham as an automatic partnership. It does give Emery evidence to consider when deciding how to create better opportunities in the league.
Villa’s victory at Coventry also featured goals from corner routines. Hemmings’ contribution showed another route: finding the striker from open play.
Emery’s praise carries a clear selection message
Hemmings’ involvement also helps explain why he remains prominent in Emery’s thinking.
Discussing his attacking options afterwards, the manager said: “George is playing fantastic.”
Those comments, carried by ESPN’s report on Emery’s selection explanation, came as he discussed the competition facing Alejandro Garnacho.
Hemmings is therefore contributing while other players wait for opportunities. Our George Hemmings profile explains his route into Villa’s first-team picture.
Against Tottenham, the challenge would be to repeat that influence in a different contest. One productive pass cannot resolve Villa’s league scoring problems.
It can, however, show what their attack needs more often: a creator finding the forward at the right moment.
