# Zion Suzuki saves prove crucial in Aston Villa’s 3-2 Spurs win

Zion Suzuki’s performance in Aston Villa’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur deserves just as much attention as the attacking players who eventually decided the game.

Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emiliano Buendía supplied the goals in north London.

But Villa may never have reached the position to punish Tottenham without Suzuki.

Spurs dominated significant periods of the first half and repeatedly threatened to take control before Manzambi finally broke the deadlock in stoppage time.

Suzuki’s interventions kept Unai Emery’s side alive long enough for the game to turn.

## Suzuki keeps Aston Villa alive at Tottenham

Villa spent much of the opening period defending.

Tottenham enjoyed the better chances and repeatedly reached dangerous positions as Emery’s side struggled to establish control.

Suzuki remained composed.

The Japan international made several important saves and dealt confidently with the pressure around his penalty area.

National match coverage also highlighted Suzuki as one of Villa’s most important performers during Tottenham’s dominant opening spell.

That contribution is easy to overlook because of what happened afterwards.

Manzambi scored immediately before half-time before Villa became far more dangerous after the interval.

## Villa attack benefits from Suzuki foundation

Once Villa survived Tottenham’s early pressure, the game changed.

Manzambi gave Emery’s side the lead before combining with Jackson for the second.

Buendía then made it 3-0 with an excellent finish.

Our [Aston Villa player ratings against Tottenham](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/09/19/aston-villa-player-ratings-tottenham-manzambi/) gave Suzuki one of the highest marks of the afternoon because his contribution came when the contest was still finely balanced.

That distinction matters.

A goalkeeper making saves at 3-0 protects a result.

Suzuki was making them while the score remained level and Tottenham had momentum.

Without that platform, Villa’s attacking improvement may never have mattered.

## Emery praises Suzuki consistency

Emery also singled out Suzuki after the game.

The Villa manager said his goalkeeper was maintaining the performance level he had already shown before the Tottenham victory.

That praise came as Emery discussed the individual improvements visible across his new-look side.

Jackson was another player the manager highlighted after scoring his first Premier League goal for Villa.

But Suzuki’s consistency has arguably been even more important during a difficult opening to the campaign.

Villa have undergone considerable change and are still adapting after a busy summer.

Having a goalkeeper capable of producing decisive moments gives Emery valuable security while the rest of the side develops.

## Suzuki emerging as key Villa figure

Saturday demonstrated why.

Villa did not dominate Tottenham.

They had to suffer, defend and wait for their opportunities.

Suzuki was fundamental to allowing them to do that.

Manzambi understandably took the headlines after producing a goal and an assist, with his performance already creating a [major selection decision for Emery](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/09/19/johan-manzambi-unai-emery-aston-villa-decision/).

Jackson also delivered the breakthrough performance his manager had been waiting for.

Yet neither attacking contribution should overshadow what happened before Villa scored.

Suzuki ensured they remained in the contest.

For a goalkeeper still establishing himself in Emery’s rebuilt team, that may prove one of the most important performances of his early Aston Villa career.
