# Victor Lindelöf begins demanding Sweden run during Aston Villa break

Victor Lindelöf could face a demanding international schedule before returning to Aston Villa, with Sweden beginning a run of four Nations League matches in just 11 days on Friday night.

The 32-year-old has been included in Graham Potter’s squad and is set to lead his country into their opening League B fixture against Romania.

Sweden’s [official Nations League squad announcement](https://www.svenskfotboll.se/nyheter/landslag/2026/09/trupp-nations-league/) lists Lindelöf among Potter’s defensive options after the Aston Villa centre-back reached 80 senior international appearances.

Romania visit the Strawberry Arena on Friday, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm BST.

It begins a particularly busy period for Lindelöf at a time when his importance to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa defence has increased considerably.

## Victor Lindelöf faces four Sweden games in 11 days

Friday’s meeting with Romania is only the beginning of Sweden’s September and October Nations League programme.

According to [UEFA’s official Sweden fixture list](https://www.uefa.com/uefanationsleague/teams/127/matches/), Potter’s side face Poland at home on Monday before travelling to Bosnia and Herzegovina on October 2.

Sweden then visit Romania for the reverse fixture on October 5.

That gives Lindelöf the possibility of playing four competitive internationals before returning to Bodymoor Heath.

The schedule is:

- **Sweden vs Romania:** Friday 25 September
- **Sweden vs Poland:** Monday 28 September
- **Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Sweden:** Friday 2 October
- **Romania vs Sweden:** Monday 5 October

Villa do not return to Premier League action until after the international window, but Emery will still be hoping one of his increasingly important defenders comes through the schedule without any fitness problems.

Our [Aston Villa international-break tracker](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/09/21/aston-villa-international-break-tracker-call-ups-bodymoor-heath/) is following Lindelöf and Villa’s other international players throughout the break.

## Lindelöf has become increasingly important to Aston Villa

The international workload arrives after Lindelöf strengthened his position in Emery’s team.

He started alongside Tyrone Mings as Villa secured their first Premier League victory of the season with a dramatic 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

His place has become particularly significant with Pau Torres unavailable through injury.

We recently looked at [why Victor Lindelöf has quietly become vital to Aston Villa](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/09/22/victor-lindelof-quietly-vital-aston-villa-unai-emery/), with the Sweden international providing Emery with experience and composure during a period of change in defence.

Lindelöf’s [Aston Villa player profile](https://readastonvilla.com/squad/victor-lindelof/) also highlights his versatility.

Although primarily a centre-back, Emery has previously trusted him in midfield when Villa needed additional defensive control.

That adaptability makes his availability particularly useful while Torres continues his recovery.

## Sweden captain remains central to Graham Potter

Lindelöf’s importance is not restricted to Villa.

UEFA lists the defender as Sweden’s captain, a role he has held since 2021.

The former Manchester United defender led his country during the World Cup earlier this year and remains one of the most experienced members of Potter’s squad.

His 80 caps comfortably make him one of Sweden’s senior figures heading into the new Nations League campaign.

Friday’s match against Romania therefore represents more than an opportunity to maintain match sharpness during Villa’s domestic break.

Lindelöf is expected to carry significant responsibility as Sweden attempt to make a strong start in Group B4.

## Unai Emery will want Lindelöf back fresh

Regular competitive football can benefit players during a lengthy break from club action.

However, four matches across such a short period also creates a workload Villa will need to monitor.

Lindelöf has become increasingly difficult for Emery to leave out, particularly while Villa’s defensive options remain affected by injuries.

There is no suggestion that the defender currently has a fitness issue.

The priority is simply for Lindelöf to return from international duty healthy and ready for Villa’s next run of fixtures.

If he does, Emery should have one of his most experienced defenders arriving back at Bodymoor Heath with plenty of competitive football behind him.
