Aston Villa’s reliance on Kamara sets Emery an October challenge

Aston Villa have played almost their entire Premier League campaign with Boubacar Kamara on the pitch. October will test how long Unai Emery can maintain that continuity while competing in Europe.

Boubacar Kamara’s minutes stand at 444 across five league starts, according to Opta’s season statistics. That represents 98.7 per cent of the available regulation playing time.

It is a clear measure of his place in Emery’s plans. With midweek fixtures returning after the international break, the manager must also consider how Villa function when Kamara needs a rest.

Boubacar Kamara minutes underline Emery’s trust

Kamara completed each of Villa’s first four league matches before playing 84 minutes in the win at Tottenham.

That consistency matters in a position where changing one player can alter the responsibilities of several others. The deepest midfielder must offer a passing option to the defence while helping protect the space behind teammates moving forward.

Kamara has also contributed in possession. FotMob records 212 successful passes at an accuracy of 87.6 per cent, alongside 51 line-breaking passes in the league.

Those figures help explain why continuity in his position has value. They do not establish that Villa cannot cope without him, or that his current workload is excessive.

Five league matches spread across several weeks are a different challenge from repeated weekend and midweek starts.

October changes the selection calculation

Villa’s first five competitive fixtures after the break fall between 10 and 24 October.

Brentford visit first, followed by Fenerbahçe, a trip to Newcastle, Viking and Manchester City. Our guide to Villa’s fixtures after the international break sets out the domestic schedule.

UEFA confirms the two European home games on 14 and 21 October. Each is followed by a Saturday Premier League fixture.

That sequence reduces the time available for recovery and preparation. It also makes planned substitutions potentially valuable: Emery can manage minutes within matches as well as changing his starting side.

The difficulty is deciding when a game allows it. Removing a holding midfielder while protecting a narrow lead can create a different problem from resting him before kick-off.

Coventry provides a useful starting point

Emery has already shown a willingness to give Kamara a complete night off.

The midfielder remained an unused substitute during Villa’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory at Coventry. That offers a practical example of the team winning without requiring him to enter the match.

It does not guarantee the same approach will work against stronger opposition. It does, however, give Emery something to develop.

João Gomes’ return from suspension has also restored a senior midfield option, as we covered when his domestic ban ended.

The next task is to establish combinations that can share the work while preserving Villa’s balance. That may involve distributing Kamara’s responsibilities between players rather than asking one replacement to reproduce everything he does.

His early-season selection record makes his importance clear. A dependable alternative would give Emery more freedom to choose when to use him.
