# Aston Villa boss Sørensen delivers ‘minute one’ verdict after winning start

Aston Villa interim boss Brian Sørensen offered an encouraging assessment of his side’s performance after Wednesday’s 3-1 cup victory over Newcastle United.

Villa’s official post-match interview carries the verdict [“Really good from minute one”](https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2026/october/01/Sorensen-post-match-newcastle-players-cup/), reflecting his satisfaction with the display that began his temporary spell in charge.

The result followed Natalia Arroyo’s departure and a difficult opening to the Women’s Super League season.

For Sørensen, it provided an immediate positive before Villa return to league action against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

## Brian Sørensen gets encouraging Aston Villa response

Lucia Kendall’s late double settled Wednesday’s contest, with the midfielder making a decisive contribution after coming off the bench.

Our analysis of [Kendall’s impact against Newcastle](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/10/01/lucia-kendall-aston-villa-newcastle-double/) examines how the substitution helped turn a level game into a Villa victory.

Sørensen’s assessment also offers a broader point of encouragement: his praise concerned the performance from the outset, even though Villa needed those late goals to secure the result.

The [3-1 win at Keys Park](https://readastonvilla.com/2026/09/30/aston-villa-women-newcastle-result-sorensen/) maintained Villa’s perfect start to the Subway Players Cup following their opening victory over Nottingham Forest.

Their league campaign still needs its first win, however. Wednesday supplied a positive result after the Tottenham defeat, but Sunday will test whether Villa can carry that improvement into the WSL.
