Aston Villa’s Oscar Johnson wins England penalty in Germany defeat

Aston Villa youngster Oscar Johnson won the penalty that brought England Under-17s level during Sunday’s 3–2 defeat by Germany.

The forward chased a through ball into the area before Germany captain Ben Nwachukwu brought him down, according to England’s official match report.

Reggie Watson converted the spot-kick to cancel out Maroko Soldic’s opener, giving England a route back into their final match of the international window.

Mylo Bernard subsequently put England ahead on the hour, but the hosts recovered through Linus Güther before Niko Ilicevic scored the winner in the 83rd minute.

The result ended England’s tournament with a defeat after victories over Israel and Venezuela.

For Villa supporters following the club’s academy players, Johnson’s involvement provided a positive within a disappointing result. His run into the box created England’s equalising opportunity, although Watson took and scored the penalty.

Johnson was one of two Villa forwards named in Barry Lewtas’ squad for the international window, alongside Josh Blake.

The camp formed part of England’s preparations for November’s UEFA Under-17 EURO qualifiers, giving the Villa pair experience at international youth level.
