# Aston Villa set to take legal action against Jamie Carragher over comments

**Aston Villa have announced plans to initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher following his comments about the club and its supporters.**

The [Premier League](https://readastonvilla.com/tag/premier-league/) side released a strongly worded statement on Friday, with chairman Nassef Sawiris accusing the former Liverpool defender of making unacceptable remarks.

The issue started after Jamie Carragher questioned whether [Unai Emery](https://readastonvilla.com/tag/unai-emery/) would turn down an opportunity to manage Manchester United. His comments on the Stick to Football podcast angered [Aston Villa](https://readastonvilla.com/tag/aston-villa/) supporters, after he suggested the Midlands club would always be below the biggest sides in English football.

## **What did Jamie Carragher say about Aston Villa?**

Jamie Carragher suggested Emery would be interested in taking charge of Manchester United if the opportunity presented itself.

“Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again,” [Carragher said](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cqd09p3kppyvo).

“There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not.

“So Real Madrid will take Manchester United’s best player, they did it with \[Cristiano\] Ronaldo.

“And there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they’ll take their players or manager, so shut the \[expletive\] up Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”

Carragher later addressed the reaction on the Overlap Daily, explaining that he considers Emery one of the best managers in the Premier League and believes Manchester United would be interested in appointing him.

“I’m not saying he’ll go – I’m just saying if it was me I’d ask the question,” he explained.

He also admitted that telling Villa supporters to leave his social media alone was probably unnecessary, although he insisted his comments were made in jest.

## **Villa respond with strong statement**

Villa have now taken a firm position on the matter, with Sawiris personally signing the club’s statement announcing the intended legal action.
