Nicolas Jackson continued his rich scoring form with an impressive display against Fulham. He scored his sixth goal in all competitions during October, putting Unai Emery’s side in a good position to take all three points.
However, Zion Suzuki failed to hold on to Alex Iwobi’s inswinging corner midway through the second half, fumbling the ball over the line for an unfortunate own goal.
Aston Villa were left frustrated after failing to turn their advantage into a victory at Villa Park. Victor Lindelof admitted his side struggled to control the game after the break, while Emery accepted that Fulham deserved a share of the points.
Lindelof unhappy with Villa’s second-half display
Speaking to VillaTV after the game, Lindelof was honest about where Villa fell short and felt they needed to show more after the interval.
“Obviously, we’re disappointed not to get the three points today, but then again, the way we came out in the second half is not good enough.
“The first 20 minutes, we didn’t manage to keep the ball, they created a few too many chances and obviously we conceded the goal.
“The second half, we have to come out stronger and be able to control the game in a better way. It cost us three points today.”
“We’ve been performing well and winning matches which is super, super important,” Lindelof added.
“I think that’s also one of the (reasons) why (we’re) a little bit disappointed today.
“We felt like we (could’ve) had three points, and we wanted to get three points today, but it’s football.”
Unai Emery accepts Fulham deserved a point
Unai Emery shared Lindelof’s disappointment but agreed that Fulham had done enough to earn a draw. The Villa boss felt his team were better before the break but struggled to maintain that level in the second half.
“It’s a disappointing result, a fair result,” Unai Emery said after the game.
“They deserved it as well because they are playing well, they are organised and they created chances. We played the first half, dominating more, creating more chances than the second half.”
Emery also wants his players to put the result behind them quickly, with Barcelona next in the Champions League before an away trip to Manchester United.
“There’s still work to do and of course after today, and this result being disappointing for us, we keep going forward, trying to analyse and improve.”
