Aston Villa face their toughest test of the Champions League campaign so far when they travel to Spain to take on Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Unai Emery’s side have made an excellent start to their European campaign, winning all three opening matches to collect nine points and sit second in the Champions League table.

Barcelona, meanwhile, occupy eighth position with six points from their first three fixtures. Hansi Flick’s side have already suffered a 4-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain but will be looking to use home advantage at Spotify Camp Nou to get back on track.

Aston Villa vs Barcelona: Recent form and head-to-head

Aston Villa have beaten Club Brugge, Fenerbahce and Viking FK to maintain their perfect Champions League record, scoring 12 goals and conceding just three.

Nicolas Jackson remains one of Villa’s main threats, having scored seven goals in his last seven appearances in all competitions. Emiliano Buendia is another player to watch, having scored in each of his last four major European appearances.

Barcelona have won 12 of their 14 matches in all competitions this season, with their only defeats coming against PSG and Real Madrid. However, their defensive record is a concern with Barcelona failing to keep a clean sheet in their last 18 Champions League matches.

The two clubs have met four times in European competition, with Barcelona winning twice, Villa claiming one victory and the other meeting ending in a draw. Unai Emery also has a difficult record at Camp Nou, having won just once in 15 visits.

Team news and where to watch Barcelona vs Aston Villa

Joao Cancelo, Gerard Martin, Pau Cubarsi and Alejandro Balde are currently the only available first-team defenders for Barcelona.

Jules Kounde and Xavi Espart will miss the game with ankle injuries, while Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen are out with thigh problems. Dani Olmo and Roony Bardghji are the other absentees.

Aston Villa will be without Amadou Onana with an ACL injury, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Matteo Ruggeri are also unavailable with hamstring injuries.
