Matty Cash has become an important part of Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side. The defender will be missing when they travel to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Poland international received his fifth Premier League yellow card in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Fulham, meaning he will miss one match.

It’s a blow for Villa as they try to get back on track. Although it shows how much Cash has become a key player since joining from Nottingham Forest.

Cash has become a key figure under Emery

Cash joined Villa in September 2020 in a deal worth an initial £14 million, rising to a maximum of £16 million.

Since joining, he has quickly become a staple in the first team. He was named Player of the Season for 2021/22.

Cash has been a regular throughout Villa’s progression under Emery. He has played 191 times in the Premier League and scored 10 goals.

His adaptability makes him a valuable asset to the manager. Emery has praised his versatility in the past. His energetic and attacking nature means he can be an attacking threat.

Cash has had some key moments for Villa. Scoring two goals in the 3-1 victory over Burnley in August 2023 and scoring the winning goal against Manchester City in October 2025.

Suspension comes at an important time for Villa

Cash was booked in the 76th minute during the game against Fulham, receiving his fifth yellow card of the Premier League season. This means he must serve a one-game suspension as per league rules and will therefore miss Villa’s game against Manchester United.

Villa will be disappointed by their draw against Fulham. They took the lead through Nicolas Jackson, but an own goal from goalkeeper Zion Suzuki helped Fulham earn a point.

Emery will need to think about how he can best replace Cash.

Carrick’s side have been inconsistent and lost 2-0 to Chelsea last time they played. But Villa will have to be careful to not underestimate them.

Both teams have Europa League commitments ahead of the game on Sunday. Villa will be playing at Barcelona, and United will be welcoming Roma.

Cash remains an important part of Villa’s plans

Cash signed a contract extension to 2029 in October 2025, showing his continued importance at Villa.

He has seen the club develop from a Premier League side struggling under Dean Smith back to a regular in European competition.

Cash also enjoyed an international career. He made his debut for Poland in November 2021 and has earned 29 caps.

He is unfortunately to miss the Manchester United game, but he won’t be out for long. Over the last few seasons he has established himself as a reliable member of Emery’s squad.

Villa will need to find someone who can perform well in his absence, but once the one-game ban is served, Cash will be back in action.
