# Aston Villa news: Unai Emery must show he can adapt after Barcelona defeat

Aston Villa’s 3-0 defeat to Barcelona has raised an important question about Unai Emery’s approach. His commitment to playing out from the back has helped transform Villa, but there are occasions when sticking to a philosophy can become a problem.

An example of this was the Champions League game at Camp Nou. Villa attempted to play out of their own box slowly and carefully, despite the aggressive press from Barcelona. This had some positives but also highlighted the dangers of playing against teams that can punish any mistakes.

## **Emery’s philosophy needs the right players**

Joao Gomes made an early mistake as he tried to play the ball across his own penalty area while under pressure. Lamine Yamal intercepted the ball and scored to give Barcelona the lead.

Although it was an expensive mistake for Villa, they have struggled with these situations this season. Whether it be against Brighton or Brentford, Villa lose possession in dangerous areas which can lead to difficult situations for them.

Gomes wasn’t singled out, and rightly so. Emery has promoted this style of play for years, and he knows mistakes will happen. But just because you support a player after a mistake has been made doesn’t mean you shouldn’t criticise their style.

Tielemans added composure to the Villa squad. His ability to bring the ball under pressure and his excellent passing ability allowed Villa to progress through midfield.

Gomes offers a different set of attributes. It is still too early to see how he will develop in the long term. However, Villa cannot be sure he will offer the same control. There are alternatives in Ross Barkley and Leon Goretzka.

## **Villa have another weapon they should use more often**

Emery need not abandon his principles. Villa created chances against Barcelona by playing through pressure, but Jackson and Manzambi wasted promising opportunities.

Suzuki’s long distribution offers another way to bypass aggressive pressing. Villa showed its value against Manchester City and could use it more often.

Rather than constantly putting the ball into danger around their own box, Emery should look to vary the buildup play with more short and earlier passes. This will make Villa unpredictable and  reduce unnecessary risks.

## **Emery must be flexible without losing his identity**

Villa should not abandon the approach that has brought them this far. Emery has established a clear identity and made them competitive in Europe.

McGinn acknowledged that Villa had chances against Barcelona but failed to make the right decisions at key moments.

Progress now depends on knowing when to stick to their principles and when to adapt. Emery must find a way to make his midfield more effective against elite pressing teams.

Changing his approach when necessary would show flexibility, not weakness.

Villa do not need to abandon their identity. They need to show that it can evolve.
