Aston Villa have made their stance on Unai Emery’s future clear. They are determined to keep the Spanish manager beyond 2029. This is despite a lack of success recently and growing interest from Manchester United.
A meeting was held on Wednesday, November 4, between Villa and chairman Nassef Sawiris and key football personnel.
As a result of the meeting, there is a significant commitment to continue to work with Emery beyond his current contract, which runs until 2029.
It comes at an interesting time for the Spaniard. He has been linked with the Manchester United role due to the uncertainty around Michael Carrick.
But it also comes after a tough week for Villa. Emery’s side lost 3-0 to Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday.
They suffered a similar fate when they lost 3-0 at Bournemouth on October 28. They also drew 1-1 with Fulham recently.
However, it seems that the results have not affected their belief in Emery and his vision for the future.
Villa show faith in Emery despite recent setbacks
It is an important time to state this in light of the fact that Villa has several tough matches coming up this year.
Following the loss to Barcelona, Villa became aware of the fact that they still have a long way to go before they can be considered equal to the best teams in Europe.
There is plenty of evidence to show he was correct. Since being appointed in October 2022, Emery has transformed Villa into a consistent threat in Europe. He took them to fourth place in the Premier League in 2023/24. They have also secured a Champions League qualification for the first time in over 40 years.
Potential let down for Manchester United
It also sends a message to Manchester United, who have been considering the appointment of Emery. The future of Carrick is in doubt; so the club are considering other alternatives and looking at their future.
However, it appears that Emery is very loyal to the club. He works closely with Roberto Olabe and Damián Vidagany, who were both present at Wednesday’s meeting.
Although talks are reported to be going well, we now have a very interesting situation heading into Sunday’s 4.30pm meeting at Old Trafford. Emery will enter those doors knowing he is now at the mercy of Villa and what they want to achieve.
Good news for Villa supporters to hear that their manager and the man who has led them to their first major trophy in three decades is backed by the club.
