The last time Aston Villa scored in the league was on the 20th December 2014. That goal was scored by Christian Benteke, who now finds himself on an awful run of form. As a result of his recent woes, the Belgian failed to make the starting eleven against Chelsea this Saturday. Gabby Agbonlahor lead the line for the Villans, and the responsibility to end the horrific goal-scoring spell was firmly on his shoulders. However, the unlikely scorer of Villa’s goal was central defender Jores Okore.
Aston Villa’s first goal in a shocking 10 hours and 59 minutes came in the 48th minute of the contest. As the ball hit the back of the net, elation and relief overwhelmed Villa Park.
The goal was beautifully crafted by Carles Gil, who was yet again Villa’s shining light. After failing to beat the first man on his first delivery, the ball was returned to the spaniards feet via a Chelsea clearance. Rather than opting for the same route as before, Gil neatly drifted past Oscar to the byline. Villa’s number 25 then delivered a pin-point cross onto the head of Okore, who simply couldn’t squander the opportunity.
The defenders goal injected life into the team and fans, as we suddenly had the league leaders on the ropes. The Blues eventually regained control of the game as Willian failed to convert two opportunities. The visitors winner eventually came in the 66th minute courtesy of Branislav Ivanovic, who seems to love playing against Aston Villa.
In the end, Jores Okore’s goal sadly wasn’t enough to win or draw the game, but it rounded off a relatively pleasing performance for Villa. More importantly, the Dane’s header ends the forgettable goal drought, and also gives us a brief insight of what Carles Gil can offer to the side.
