Aston Villa Chief Executive Tom Fox has confirmed that the club will offer sought-after striker Christian Benteke a new contract.
The Belgian international has been in fine form and has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, most notably from Liverpool. But Fox speaking at Sports Industry Breakfast Club has said:
“There has been a lot of speculation and I’m not going to contribute to it or play any of our transfer strategy out in the press.
“But we will offer Christian Benteke a new deal this summer, of course we will.”
Tim Sherwood recently revealed that Benteke has a release clause of £32.5 million but he also said that he remains hopeful of holding on to the striker. Fox remained coy about the striker wanting to leave.
“If Christian wanted to leave, would we stand in his way? I think to make a blanket statement about a player wanting to leave is very difficult.
“Look at what happened with the re-signing of Fabian Delph, no-one would have thought that was possible or even something he should have done and yet he did it.”
