Ray Wilkins has officially been confirmed as Tim Sherwood’s assistant at Aston Villa.
The 58-year-old has been out of football in England since leaving Fulham last February but is understood to be excited by the opportunity to link up with Sherwood, at Villa Park.
Wilkins brings a wealth of experience to the Aston Villa coaching staff, with previous stints at Fulham, Chelsea, and QPR. He also most recently took charge of the Jordanian national team.
His most successful work came at Chelsea where he worked under Gianluca Vialli, Carlo Ancelotti, and also Guus Hiddink during the Dutchman’s spell at Stamford Bridge in 2009.
The 58-year old will start work with Villa immediately with the first set of Villa players expected at the training ground on Thursday and Friday for tests before preseason officially gets started on Monday 6th July.
Sherwood on the appointment said: “I’m really pleased to bring Ray on board. He has a fantastic knowledge of the game and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
Tim Sherwood will retain Kevin MacDonald who will be given a more prominent role in developing youth players at Bodymoor Heath.
