The Birmingham Mail’s Gregg Evans reports that Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood is looking to bring some fresh faces into his squad before the season begins on the 8th of August.
Villa are currently training in Portugal with two fixtures against Fulham and Braga while they are away. Sherwood said, he was “looking forward” to finding some “new faces” and that he was “trying to strengthen the squad”.
“It’s okay working with the ones we’ve got but the sooner we can bring in new bodies to integrate with the ones we’ve got the better.”
Idrissa Gueye has recently joined the Villans for £9-million but despite the capture of the Senegal international, Sherwood is believed to looking around the transfer market for some defenders, a striker and potentially another creative midfielder.
Considering that Villa conceded a horrific 57 goals in the Barclays Premier League last season, purchasing a few defenders would certainly strengthen them at the back and hopefully help them earn more clean sheets. The Midlands side have been linked with Ajax defender, Nicolai Boilesen on several occasions in order to help out in defence – having already bolstered the back-line by buying Micah Richards.
Although Christian Benteke came alive and turned into an animal under Tim Sherwood, Villa only managed 11 goals during Paul Lambert’s reign at the beginning of the season, and with Benteke potentially leaving, a new striker could be on the cards.
