Birmingham 1-1 Aston Villa, 16th January 2011
The last time these two rivals met was back in January 2011. Villa travelled to St. Andrews in search of a seventh win out of nine, against their local rivals.
Unfortunately for Villa, they were 1-0 down early on in the second half, from a Roger Johnson strike. It was coming for the Blues and their centre-half finally made the breakthrough.
Although Aston Villa’s centre-back, James Collins, answered with an equaliser, late on in the game, after Villa finally broke through the Blues defence, after an immense period of pressure from the away team.
Villa and Birmingham fought out a tightly contested game, and with both sides in the relegation battle at the time, it was a good point, considering neither could afford to lose, especially against one another.
Birmingham 2-1 Aston Villa 1st December 2010
Just a month before their second Premier League encounter, was the League Cup tie between these two sides. From Aston Villa’s previous record at Birmingham, they were surprised, when the Blues snatched a late victory, in an extremely heated clash between the two sides, and sets of fans.
In the opening period of the game, Birmingham’s experienced midfielder, Lee Bowyer, was bundled over inside the penalty box by Aston Villa’s, Richard Dunne, and to no surprise, Sebastian Larsson stepped up, and coolly finished it home. Before this game, Villa didn’t concede against blues in their last three encounters against them.
Villa knew that record had come to a halt, and so did their six-match unbeaten streak, against their rivals. Although local lad Gabriel Agbonlahor equalised for the Villans, Birmingham had a new hero in town, when £6million signing Nicola Zigic, turned the ball home in the last five minutes of the game.
Blues fans were ecstatic to of finally beaten their rivals, but Villa fans were livid, and with the late winner from Birmingham, there was obviously a lot of trouble after the game, which some say made England lose out in the bid, to host the World cup.
Aston Villa 0-0 Birmingham 31st October 2010
Usually when these two teams face each other, there is always some excitement in the game, but this game was not one of them. It was one of them boring, frustrating 0-0 draws. It does say a lot though, that it was the type of game which was rare for when these two clashed against each other, as the last 0-0 draw before then, was back in the 2003/04 season.
Birmingham would have been the happier team to gain the point out of the two sides, as, before this match, Birmingham haven’t been able to beat Villa, at Villa Park, since 2004.
Except five yellow cards in the game, there was hardly anything to shout about for either side and was one to forget in the records between these rivals.
