With the Second City derby to be played tomorrow, we look at what could be the difference between the two teams after 90 minutes.
Determination
Determination always plays a key role in rivalries. Whichever team wants to win it more usually wins as form is usually thrown out the window in these derbies. Many people will presume that Birmingham will have the added drive to go out and win this one, considering they’re the underdogs, but let’s not forget that Tim Sherwood is a master at motivating and he’ll make sure that The Villans are well prepared for the clash.
Skill
Although derbies are about mental strength more than anything, the team which has more ability will be favorites to win. In this case it’s Aston Villa, they are currently in the division above their rivals and have the creative talent in Jack Grealish who can tear Birmingham’s defence apart.
Form
As said before, the form of the two sides usually doesn’t play a part in derby matches, but considering Villa’s fairly poor start to the season, they will be even more eager to advance into the next round. Birmingham on the other hand, have only lost once this season and will want it to continue that way.
Behaviour
This match has a history of crowd violence which could affect the game in terms of atmosphere. We have also seen players lose their heads in the past which could result in red cards or injury, particularly from the locals who understand the game rather than some of the foreign players.
