With Aston Villa set to take on Liverpool at Anfield tomorrow, Aston Villa manager, Tim Sherwood spoke on the upcoming match according to the Aston Villa website.
Sherwood began by stating that “We have a good idea how Liverpool might set up. Brendan’s very adaptable. They have a lot of players in a lot of areas”. Coming off a tight victory to Carlisle United, this game would be a key one for Sherwood and his young squad to take advantage of the somewhat vulnerable Liverpool side.
Sherwood also admits that he wishes point wise that Villa would be off to a better start but he is optimistic going forward because of his new squad. With an average age of 26 years, there is much potential and youth to work with this coming year.
Tim Sherwood also commented on facing against his past starlet for the first time, Christian Benteke. Sherwood, described, Benteke as a ‘top player’ stating that “We’d have liked to have kept him.” Benteke scored a large majority of Aston Villa’s goals in his three-year stint with them – scoring 42 goals. It is evident this season that the squad misses his contribution.
The Villa boss did not seem to be phased by the departures of major parts of the club from last year as he commented saying, “Christian’s gone, Fabian’s gone, Tom Cleverley’s gone. They’re all established Premier League players. We will now develop what we have. We’re a work in progress and we’re happy with the squad.” He shows optimism for the club moving forward saying these players were all developed with Villa and they will continue to develop future stars.
On the upcoming match, Tim Sherwood commented that “Anytime is good to play Liverpool. It’s always good to go to Anfield. They haven’t got as many points as they would’ve liked. Neither have we. It’s not a good time to play us either.”
Both teams have had disappointing openings to the season by both clubs standards, so this game is a crucial fixture for both squads moving forward.
