Steve Round set for Villa role

Steve Round is set to become a part of Remi Garde’s backroom team at Aston Villa, with John Percy from the Daily Telegraph reporting.

The new Villa boss had wanted to bring Gerard Baticle and Bruno Genesio with him from Lyon, but with that move being blocked he has now turned to Round, who has prior Premier League experience.

Round, who was assistant to David Moyes at Everton and Manchester United, is expected to take up a similar role before Villa’s trip to Goodison Park on Saturday.

The experienced coach is said to be joining on a short term deal, after rejecting the chance to join Steve McClaren at Newcastle United and Tim Sherwood’s Villa earlier this term.

His most recent coaching role was with Derby County last season under Steve McClaren, who he had previously worked with at Middlesbrough. He has also worked with Sam Allardyce in a brief spell at Newcastle.

Remi Garde will be hoping the ex-defender can use his experience to improve Villa’s current position, starting with a good result against his former club Everton on Saturday.
