Gabriel Agbonlahor’s time at Aston Villa may come to an end in January if his performances don’t improve according to the Daily Mirror/Sunday People.
The long-time servant of the club has faced injury problems in recent years, with a calf problem being the latest in a long line of injury woes for the former England international.
Depending on your opinion on whether Agbonlahor is a player worth salvaging (if he is salvageable) will probably decide if you pop open the champagne bottle, or see it as another dent in Villa’s survival hopes.
The 29-year old’s stock have been in major decline since his England days in 2008-09, and the winger lacks that lightning pace that wowed us all when he first burst onto the scene.
Whilst injuries haven’t helped, Agbonlahor certainly hasn’t done any favours with the quality of his performances so far this season.
Agbonlahor hasn’t scored since March, and his performance against Spurs saw him have just eight touches of the ball before being subbed off, in a game that saw Gary Neville pull no punches in criticising The Villan.
Speaking during Monday Night Football, the former United defender stated: “You’ve got absolutely no chance if you can’t get your centre forward in the game, and eight touches, with two of them kick-offs is just… worrying.”
However, Agbonlahor is determined to win back the support he once had during the glory days of his partnership with Ashley Young, even dipping into his own savings to get physiotherapy in Los Angeles; whether that can make the difference between a Robbie Fowler esque Indian summer, or future Salford City player remains to be seen
