The most difficult opponent Villa need to over come is themselves. A manager can decide on tactics, patterns of play and the personal most suited for the task but this is nothing unless the players believe they can win. Win-less since the opening day and without a win at home has left Villa players devoid of belief and confidence.
Regardless of what they say in interviews, the players are given away by their body language. Heads go down when they concede. If a player makes a bad pass he then actively avoids difficult passes despite the potential reward if it comes off. Every incorrect decision is considered deliberate bias from the officials and a deflection a direct intervention from fate itself.
Change in attitudes will only come from a win. Achieving that though is difficult when to the players it seems impossible. Sherwood was able to restore confidence last season, but, he also managed to destroy it this season before Garde arrived. Villa are well past the arm around a player and tell him he’s great approach favoured by Sherwood now.
So how do Villa finally win? The answer, as always in sport is to do the basics well, especially true in defending. Close down quickly, mark your man tight, track runners, clear your lines and fight hard for the first, second and third ball.
The players also need to be brave. Not just sticking your head in where it hurts but up front.Take on your man, try the hard through ball, aim for the top corner don’t just get it on target.
One win can do wonders. A win leads to more wins. Even if Villa don’t win enough to stay up, restoring some pride is essential if Villa want to come straight back up
