How good is Villa’s record for England squad appearances?

What’s Aston Villa’s record like when it comes to their players being called up for England duty at major tournaments?

Now Roy Hodgson has revealed his squad for this summer’s tournament, which included no Villa players in it, it’s worth a thought.

Well, the Birmingham Mail have done some research and worked it all out.

The main figure is 13. Just 13 times has a Villa player been included in an England squad for a European Championship or World Cup.

Villa’s most selected player whilst at the club? Gareth Southgate. He represented England three times whilst playing in the Midlands.

Those 13 appearances in a tournament squad come from 10 players. They are:

  • Gareth Southgate (3 times selected)
  • Darius Vassell (2 times selected)
  • Tony Daley (1)
  • Steve Hodge (1)
  • Stephen Warnock (1)
  • Peter Withe (1)
  • James Milner (1)
  • Gareth Barry (1)
  • Emile Heskey (1)
  • David Platt (1)

Whilst it’s probably no surprise that after the disappointing season Villa have had, none of their English contingent have been selected by Hodgson, but their record over history doesn’t represent that of a club of their status.
