After the disaster that was last season, Aston Villa seem to be looking to sharpen up their defence early with France Football reporting that the club have made 21-year-old full back Frederic Guilbert their latest target.
Guilbert has already played for Caen and AS Cherbourg before making the big move into Ligue 1. He made 34 appearances for Bordeaux last season and was impressive playing as either a right back or as a centre back and has represented France at under 21 level.
Villa, however, may not move for Guibert this summer as he currently is into the last 12 months of his contract and it is looking unlikely for him to re-sign for the French side as they look to bring Mathieu Debuchy in on a permanent deal, giving the option of a free transfer in January.
Roberto Di Matteo seemingly wants to improve his squad early and due to the success of bringing players in from the French league over recent years, that may be the perfect place to start to rebuild the club to push the Villa back into the Premier League.
Villa may face competition for the young Frenchman’s signature, however, with France Football also reporting that Sunderland are interested in the defender.
