As we stand on the brink of our first foray into English football’s second tier for the first time since the 1987/1988 season and our opening fixture against Sheffield Wednesday gets closer, I can’t help but feel optimistic.
However, amongst the optimism and excitement for another season there are still some harsh realities that we as Villa fans must not forget.
This is the same squad that showed more spirit on their Twitter and Instagram accounts than we ever saw on the pitch, so caution is obviously advised.
We await Roberto Di Matteo’s cull and can only hope he’ll shift the dead wood either permanently or at least on loan for the season. Just ask QPR fans what happens when you have these type of players dominating your squad in the Championship…

The Championship requires a certain type of player; leaders, fighters who at 1-0 down at half time to Rotherham (sorry lads) on a wet away weekday can drag a result out of nothing.
Now just for a minute imagine how some of our superstars from last season would deal with it… okay don’t imagine it; we all suffered enough last season!
It’s a time of change at Aston Villa and I’m sure all of us would agree that it’s about time. With Xia’s take over complete surely the only way is up. Is this successful business man also capable of waking this sleeping giant?
He talks a good game, if we see him at half the games this coming season that would be an improvement from the previous regime.
I for one will back him, he’s young and full of ideas and that is exactly what this club needs. For too long we’ve lived off our past successes. Don’t get me wrong, while that should always be celebrated its time for us to make some more history.

Caution may be advised but there is already some light at the end of the tunnel. Tommy Elphick is a massive indication of the type of player RDM wants; grit, determination and as the man himself said:
I’m an all or nothing sort of guy.
That is what we’ve been crying out for from the terraces, players who say I play for Aston Villa and I will stop at nothing until this club is back where it belongs. I will stop at nothing until we are not just back where we belong but back along Europe’s elite. We’re down but don’t for one second think we’re out.

So let’s approach this season with careful optimism, dare to dream of an instant return and do you know what, let’s enjoy it while we’re here.
