Villa have confirmed that Carles Gil has joined Deportivo on a season-long loan deal, as Roberto Di Matteo begins to trim his squad ahead of the new season.
Gil, who joined Villa from Valencia in January 2015 for £3.2 million, impressed during his initial weeks at the club, including scoring a fantastic goal against Bournemouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
However, after Paul Lambert departed the following month, Gil found opportunities hard to come by under Tim Sherwood with Jack Grealish often preferred over him in the starting line-up.
The Spaniard was given more opportunities by Sherwood’s successor, Remi Garde, but he struggled to make any sort of impression as Villa slid towards the bottom of the table.
Although he did feature in the first pre-season game this summer, Roberto Di Matteo has decided he is surplus to requirements with the likes of Jack Grealish and Aaron Tshibola both pushing for places in the starting line-up ahead of the new season.
