Roberto Di Matteo admitted his side lost confidence after Luton equalized, as his side suffered their latest humiliation, losing 3-1 to League Two Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.
Villa initially took the lead in Bedfordshire, after Jordan Ayew bundled the ball home in the 13th minute.
However, after an enterprising opening 20 minutes from the visitors, Luton began to exert some pressure on Villa’s fragile backline and equalized in the 35th minute through Jake Grey.
At half-time, Di Matteo made the disastrous mistake of moving Micah Richards to CB and it would be Richards who was massively out of position when Luton took the lead in the 53rd minute.
Further embarrassment was to follow for Villa, when Jores Okore poked the ball into his own net under no pressure to give Luton their third of the match.
Following the game, Di Matteo said:
I thought that we started the game well actually.
After the equaliser we lost a bit of confidence and then second half it was difficult to explain how we went from such a performance to not looking like a team.
Di Matteo further admitted that there is a need for more new faces.
We know that we need some fresh faces and players that can bring a fresh impetus to us as well.
Villa’s next game sees them take on Rotheramn at Villa Park on Saturday.
