Di Matteo has two matches to save his job

He was appointed with great optimism just a few months ago, but now Roberto Di Matteo’s future with Aston Villa looks bleak with the Telegraph stating that he has just two games to save his job.

Owner Tony Xia is growing increasingly concerned with the results of his side and is not afraid of making a big decision this early into the season.

Xia appointed Di Matteo back in June and allowed him to invest over £50m into summer transfers which are yet to make an impact for the club.

After just one win from their opening nine Championship games, Villa, with a squad expected to make a challenge for the promotion places, sit in 17th place – seven points adrift from the play-off places.

It’s believed that if Di Matteo fails to win one of their next two games he could be sacked over the international break. Villa are on the road twice in the space of a week. Firstly, a trip to Barnsley tomorrow night before travelling to Preston on the weekend.

Xia will surely look to the other relegated sides and compare how they’re getting on with his Villa side. Norwich sit top of the Championship with Newcastle close behind in fourth, he has every right to be critical of the job Di Matteo has done.
