Match Report: Leeds United 2-0 Aston Villa

A 2-0 defeat saw Villa’s seven match unbeaten run under Steve Bruce come to an end, as a change in system failed to pay dividends in Yorkshire.

Following last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Cardiff, Bruce made three changes to his starting line-up. Rudy Gestede and Gary Gardner replaced the attacking duo of Jordan Ayew and Jack Grealish, whilst Tommy Elphick replaced the injured Nathan Baker.

A cagey first-half in Yorkshire saw neither side create a clear cut chance, with Gary Gardner’s effort in the 37th minute the closest either side came to opening the scoring.

Villa began the second-half on the front foot and only a brilliant save from Rob Green stopped Adomah opening the scoring in the 53rd minute.

Grealish was introduced into the action in the 67th minute, but Villa found themselves behind moments later. Kemar Roofe connected with a cross from the left and headed in past an onrushing Pierluigi Gollini to put the home side ahead.

Bruce brought on Agbonlahor and Ayew as he searched for an equalizer, but it was to be Leeds who scored the second and final goal of the game.

Gollini was unable to keep hold of Hadi Sacko’s driven shot and Chris Wood pounced on the loose ball and slotted home.

The result leaves Villa in 13th, five points off the play-off spots.
