Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce suggested a lack of confidence in front of goal has become his team’s ‘big Achilles heel’ in recent weeks.
The Villa Park outfit sit 16th in the Sky Bet Championship after a disappointing 1-0 loss at home to Ipswich on Saturday,
A 2-1 win over Burton Albion at home on Boxing Day was the club’s last victory with the club failing to win in eight games since.
They have only scored four goals in those eight games despite the addition of Brentford forward Scott Hogan, Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane and six other signings in the January transfer window.
The team has also been inconvenienced by the running saga between Bruce and star striker Ross McCormack who has subsequently been loaned to Nottingham Forest, whilst fellow attackers Rudy Gestede and Jordan Ayew also left the Midlands club in January.
Bruce speaking on BBC Radio West Midlands commented:
“We’ve go to improve in what we do with the ball. The big problem is we don’t score enough. That is our big Achilles heel.
“Nobody envisaged that Aston Villa could be in the bottom half of the Championship. But that’s where we’re at. We have to batten down the hatches and keep plodding away.”
Aston Villa host Barnsley at Villa Park tomorrow night before an away trip to Championship leaders Newcastle United next Monday.
