It’s been a couple of weeks since Aston Villa brought free agent defender Christopher Samba in to train with the squad in a bid to earn a contract until the end of the season.
That being said, we’re still no closer to finding out whether Villa will decide to sign Samba on a permanent basis.
The 32-year-old spent a week training with Crystal Palace and Sam Allardyce, who managed the physical centre-back at Blackburn but opted against signing him.
Big Sam recommended the defender to Steve Bruce and he’s spent some time training with the squad, playing in a U23 game earlier this month.
In a statement released by the official site, Bruce says a decision will be made on Samba in the next fortnight or so.
“I watched Samba in the U23s game. I’ve known him through Big Sam and he’s wanted to come and train.
“There’s this notion that he’s on trial. It’s not really a trial as such. He wants to earn a contract and we’ve given him the platform to keep fit.
We’ll see what happens over the next two weeks or so.
Samba spent five years with Blackburn between 2007 and 2012 before leaving to join Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala. He returned to the Premier League with QPR in January 2013 but was sold back to Anzhi following the R’s relegation.
The Republic of Congo international has made 191 appearances in English football, scoring 17 goals and assisting in 14 more.
