Newly-appointed Birmingham manager, Harry Redknapp took a cheeky dig at Aston Villa striker, Gabby Agbonlahor, after he scored the winner in the Second City derby, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.
Agbonlahor poked home the only goal of the match in the 69th minute, just 10 minutes after having come on as a substitute, and it seems to have irked the newly appointed Birmingham City boss, Harry Redknapp.
In his post-match interview, Redknapp clearly wasn’t happy at the hype surrounding Agbonlahor and he shocked the room when he abruptly declared, “He’s come on and had 10 minutes. That will keep him happy here for another year.”
The highly experienced manager, who took over at Birmingham from Gianfranco Zola earlier this week, was clearly alluding to the fact that Agbonlahor, who has been at Villa Park for 12 years, has underachieved at the club due to injuries, attitude problems, and weight issues.
In fact, today’s goal was his first goal in 14 months, and in his last four seasons at Villa, he has only managed to score 11 goals. A pretty embarrassing record for a striker, if we’re being perfectly honest.
Redknapp either said this as he was annoyed that he lost his first game as Birmingham boss, or he was just having a bit of a joke with the journalists, which is something you wouldn’t put past him.
