Things haven’t really worked out for Pierluigi Gollini at Aston Villa and the Italian goalkeeper appears to be set for a permanent return to Serie A.
Villa shelled out £4.25m to bring in the former Manchester United youth star from Hellas Verona last summer and he started the season as the club’s starter under Robert di Matteo but lost his place in the side when Steve Bruce took over.
Gollini returned to Italy with Atalanta in January and made four appearances and kept three clean sheets whilst on loan with the Serie A club but they have decided not to take up their option to sign him on a permanent basis.
Villa, who will be amongst the favourites for promotion next season according to the English Championship odds, will look to offload the Italy U21 international and according to Italian media outlet La Nuovo Ferrera via Tutto Atalanta, newly promoted SPAL are said to be interested in signing him.
It’s believed that Villa would rather a permanent sale but would allow a loan deal with a view to buy in order to see Gollini leave the club.
