The North East side, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, announced the signing of AFC Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban earlier on Wedneday, and are still keen to add to their attacking ranks by signing McCormack.
The 30-year-old played 29 times for Villa last season, scoring 4 goals. New Black Cats manager Simon Grayson needs to bolster his attack, as Sunderland aim to secure promotion staright back to the Premier League next season.
They are also looking to replace Jermain Defoe, who signed for Bournemouth, up top.

The Scottish international will be allowed to leave Villa Park this summer after Steve Bruce left him out of Villa’s pre-season tour of Germany.
Sunderland will be hoping to sign the unwanted man, who has fallen out of favour at the Midlands side, as they hope he can turn things around and find his prolific scoring form again.
