Goalkeeper Jed Steer put in another good cup performance for Villa in their 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Peterborough.
Steer has been Villa’s cup keeper so far this season playing three times in the EFL cup and once in the FA Cup, leading to more questions about his future at the club.
Steer has been used sparingly during his time at Villa but has impressed in his cup cameos this season. Steer has only made one league appearance for Villa despite being at the club since the 2013-14 season where he was signed on a free from Norwich. He made his solitary league appearance in a 1-0 Premier League defeat to Burnley.
Steer has had loan spells at three different clubs during his time at Villa, spending time at Doncaster Rovers, Yeovil Town and an impressive spell at Huddersfield Town. Sadly after his impressive spell, he was ruled out for almost the entirety of the following season.
Whenever Steer has been fit he has usually been the number three keeper at Villa Park, however, this season Steer has become number two to Villa’s on-loan keeper Sam Johnstone, taking Mark Bunn’s place on the bench.

However, with rumours of Johnstone’s loan deal being cut short so that he could make a permanent move to one of the host of Premier League clubs rumoured to be vying for his signature, Steer could finally get his chance at becoming Villa’s number one.
With Villa cash-strapped due to Financial Fair Play regulations, they could look to Steer if Johnstone leaves or when his loan ends in the summer as a cheaper option than bringing in a replacement. Steer looks more than capable of making the step up to the first team and will be craving his chance for regular football.
If Johnstone does see out the rest of his loan deal at Villa Park Steer might not see much more first-team action for the rest of the season with Villa now out of all cup competitions.
Villa are also reportedly interested in making Johnstone’s loan deal permanent in the summer and if that were to go through that could mean the end of the line for Steer and he might seek a move to a club that can offer first-team football.
