Aston Villa have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Southampton defender Matt Targett, according to claims from the Mirror.
Fulham’s interest in signing Targett was well-documented throughout the summer transfer window. However, the Whites saw several offers turned down for the left-back, with Mark Hughes insisting that he is in Saints’ plans for the season ahead.

Nevertheless, it’s believed that Championship promotion hopefuls Aston Villa have expressed an interest in signing Targett on loan, with regular first-team football at St Mary’s Stadium appearing to be unlikely.
Villa want to sign a natural left-back after losing out on the signing of Joe Bryan to Fulham earlier in the month, but don’t seem to be making any progress in their bid to sign Targett on a short-term deal.
So far this season, Steve Bruce has been using Alan Hutton on the left-hand side of defence given the shortage of natural options in this particular position.
