Aston Villa have been given a major boost in their hopes of re-signing John Terry this summer.
Portuguese outlet O Jogo claims that Madeira Rodrigues, who was playing a key role in the prospect of taking Terry to Sporting, has withdrawn his application for the presidency at the club.
Both Sporting and Villa have been heavily linked with a move to sign Terry and it was believed that a move to Portugal was close.

Rodrigues was very keen to bring the player to Sporting and talked up the chances of a deal being completed.
He has now decided to drop out of the running and offer his support to fellow candidate Jose Maria Ricciardi.
While the news does not rule out the chances of a move to Portugal, the ball appears to be back in Aston Villa’s court.
Villa were keen to sign the player this summer but it was claimed that a deal was not financially viable.
