Aston Villa remain keen to strengthen their squad and have put together a five-man transfer shortlist.
The Birmingham Mail reports that John Terry, Robert Huth, Steven Caulker, James Collins and non-league star Ed Williams are all on their radar.
The club are an advantage as the first four are all currently free agents and can be signed at any time.
Caulker has been attracting interest from Championship rivals Wigan, while Collins has been training with Ipswich following his release from West Ham.
Villa remain keen to strengthen defensively after losing Terry in the summer, but there are still hopes among those at the club he could re-join.

Meanwhile, Williams has earned rave reviews playing for Kidderminster Harriers in the National League North.
The midfielder was recently called up to the England C squad following his impressive form this season.
Leeds and Derby County have also been credited with an interest, while clubs in League One and Two are also said to be taking note.
