Stan Collymore has defended Aston Villa’s Glenn Whelan’s last-minute penalty miss in Villa’s chaotic 3-3 draw against Preston North End on Tuesday night, The Boot Room reports.
Whelan’s stoppage time penalty was saved by Chris Maxwell to deny Villa from securing all three league points.
Many were left surprised when it was the defensive midfielder that stepped up to take the last-minute penalty for Villa, especially considering that he scored just one goal for the club since the beginning of last season.

However pundit Collymore has taken to Twitter to defend Whelan and hail the Irishman for his “bottle” in taking the penalty.

Villa had the likes of Jack Grealish, Yannick Bolasie and John McGinn on the pitch who could have stepped up to take the penalty but instead it was Whelan.
Pressure is increasing on Bruce who has won just one of his last 10 games in all competitions, his side currently sitting 12th in the Championship.
