John McGinn has revealed he was unsure whether he would be able to “compete” for a first team spot at Aston Villa after signing from Hibernian last summer.
The midfielder has been a key player for Villa this season in their run to the play-off final, but according to the Express and Star, the Scot initially doubted his ability in the days after he signed from Hibs.
When I signed I didn’t expect to be in right away. The manager (Steve Bruce) made me aware there were a lot of top midfield players here and that I had to prove myself.

My first couple of days here weren’t great, in training I thought ‘I don’t know if I can compete here’. But the manager had the confidence to fling me in against Wigan and it went from there.
McGinn quickly established himself in the side after his impressive debut against Wigan, assisting James Chester for Villa’s opening goal, one of his eight assists in the Championship this season.
The 24-year-old has also chipped in with six goals from midfield following his £2.75million move prior to the start of the season.
