Aston Villa could challenge West Ham in the race to sign Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez this summer.
According to Defensor Sporting Club chief Ney Castillo, cited by HITC, Dean Smith’s side have emerged as surprise contenders to rival the Hammers for the highly-rated striker.

The Hammers have been monitoring Gomez for over a year and are expected to firm up their interest this summer.
However, following Villa’s Wembley victory over Frank Lampard’s Derby County last month, the club are now keen to add to their attacking options before the start of the new season.
Villa face a battle to bring back Tammy Abraham to Villa Park from Chelsea and are now considering a move for Gomez.
The 22-year-old has scored 30 goals in Spain’s top division over the past two years and reportedly has a release clause set at a staggering £43.5m.
Valencia are also thought to be keen on the Uruguayan after his impressive season in La Liga, however, Villa may ultimately be put off by Celta Vigo’s demands.
