Aston Villa have been handed a major boost by the news that John Terry has extended his contract at the club.
As confirmed by the club’s official website, Terry’s new deal will run until 2021, ending any speculation about his immediate future.
Villa’s assistant head coach had been linked with the Middlesbrough and West Brom jobs before they were taken.
There was also some speculation among supporters that he could be on his way back to Stamford Bridge, following the impending appointment of Frank Lampard, who looks set to replace Maurizio Sarri in London.
However, that does not appear to be the case as the club prepares for a return to the Premier League.
Terry is highly thought of at Villa and will continue working alongside Dean Smith, despite his long-term ambitions of going into management one day.
Popular with the fans as a player, it seems that Terry has had a similar effect on the coaching staff. Speaking about the new deal, Villa boss Smith said:
I am really pleased that JT has extended his current deal as he is a pleasure to work with. We have had a successful start to our Villa coaching careers and JT has been instrumental in joining myself, Richard O’Kelly and Neil Cutler.
