Aston Villa are thought to be showing an interest in AS Roma forward Gregoire Defrel.
According to Italian outlet Il Messaggero, cited by Sports Witness, Villa are showing a real interest in the French forward, who spent last season out on loan with Sampdoria.
Defrel scored 12 times in all competitions during his loan spell and has since returned to his parent club.
Even though Villa boss Dean Smith is keen on adding to his striking options ahead of the new season, the news regarding Defrel comes as a surprise.
The 29-year-old has plied his entire career in Italy after coming through the youth system at Parma, finding the back of the net during his previous stints with Cesena and Sassuolo.
Fellow Premier League side Watford are also thought to be tracking the player ahead of a potential move.
