Villa drop interest in Phillips – are they making the right decision?

Aston Villa have dropped their interest in Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips, according to claims from Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports.

Reports previously suggested that Dean Smith’s side had returned with another bid for the midfielder, but saw their latest attempt rejected.

However, Dorsett claims that Villa are no longer keen to recruit Phillips, who looks set to remain at Elland Road for the foreseeable future.

It came as a surprise to see speculation surrounding a possible deal for the Leeds star resurface. Following the acquisitions of Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba, Villa certainly have their holding midfield position covered.

Phillips was – understandably – believed to have been a top target for the club, but with Marcelo Bielsa’s side remaining firm in their stance that the player would not be sold, no move has materialised.

Villa have been incredibly active in the transfer market, with their spending exceeding £100 million, but focusing on signings away from their midfield is wise if they are indeed still on the lookout for possible recruits.

Phillips would have undoubtedly been a significant signing for Smith and his men, and it would come as no surprise to see him go on to flourish before eventually securing a move to the Premier League – with or without Leeds.

However, Villa should have no regrets about failing to land the 23-year-old, with Douglas and Nakamba set for involved roles in the upcoming season.
