When looking at the supposed wages that Cahill was after at Villa, then you have to say that Dean Smith has gotten the best deal here.

Ezri Konsa and Bjorn Engels both offer Villa some youth to the Villa backline, with Smith and his staff making an effort to lower the average age of the squad ahead of their return to the top flight.
Cahill would have been on high wages, and despite a glowing character reference from John Terry, he would not have fit with how Villa are trying to do things.
